A Foundation for Growth

Explore my approach to assessment and evaluation, designed to foster student growth and demonstrate learning in meaningful ways. This page showcases my commitment to ongoing, evidence-informed practices tailored to the Ontario curriculum.

Ongoing and Purposeful

My assessment philosophy in FSL is grounded in ongoing, evidence-informed practices that honor growth over time. I integrate formative and summative tools, and provide students with multiple, authentic ways to demonstrate their learning across the Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing strands of the Ontario curriculum. My goal is to provide assessment strategies based on reliable foundations and strategies. This is important for both parents and school boards alike.

Assessment as an Instructional Tool

The most compelling example of my assessment and evaluation skills is my ability to design assessment that is ongoing, purposeful, and directly connected to learning. I use assessment as an instructional tool; gathering evidence through observation, conversations, and student work to inform next steps rather than relying on a single final product.

Science Grade 3 Unit: French Assessment & Evaluation Examples!

This long-range Science unit integrates assessment and evaluation in both Science and French as a Second Language (Immersion). The learning tasks and assessment tools are aligned with the Ontario Science curriculum, Strand E – Earth and Space Systems: Soil in the Environment, while also assessing student learning across the four strands of the Ontario FSL curriculum: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. A variety of formative assessment tools are used throughout the unit to gather evidence of learning in authentic, language-rich contexts. The inclusion of a student autoévaluation supports assessment as learning by encouraging reflection, goal-setting, and learner agency. The unit culminates in a summative grille d’évaluation, which evaluates students’ scientific understanding and their ability to communicate ideas effectively in French.
